Are you looking for a band for an event?

Do you want a variety of genres across the course of the evening?

The Julian Kuo Quintet are the band for you.

With a focus on Jazz, but the ability to play any genre of your choice, the Julian Kuo Quintet will provide music specific for your event. Made up of a selection of the best young musicians in Sydney, the group have been playing since 2005 in various incarnations, with the current being the most versatile yet.

Twenty One year old  Kuo has been singing professionally from the age of 11 when he was first cast in the Children’s Chorus of Opera Australia’s 2002 production of ‘Pagliacci/Cavalleria Rusticana’. He continued to perform with OA until 2005 during which time he sang the role of Peaseblossom in Benjamin Britten’s ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and the juvenile principal role of First Boy in Mozart’s ‘Magic Flute’. In 2003 Julian met Marcus Whale at Newington College when both were playing in the school’s jazz band and a friendship and musical collaboration was born.

The Julian Kuo Quintet are a vibrant young ensemble who share their infectious energy and enthusiasm for jazz and cabaret standards with their audiences, bringing their love of the music of earlier generations to life for their own generation. They performed monthly at the El Rocco Room from 2006 until March 2008 and regularly performed cabaret at Slide Nightclub between 2007 and 2011. Julian has also performed alongside Monique Salle in a cabaret titled ‘Buttons and Bows’, also at Slide. Julian completed a Bachelor of Music (Music Theatre) at the Australian Institute of Music (2010) and was a finalist in the 8th Annual Cabaret Showcase, 2010, at The Basement. As part of Sydney Fringe Festival 2011, Julian starred in Melvyn Morrow’s ‘Broadway Bard’ at Sidetrack Theatre and in ‘Shakers’ at the Oxford Hotel.

The Quintet continue to play the music that they enjoy with a youthful enthusiasm. Their sets are filled with standards from Cole Porter, George and Ira Gershwin, Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn, Rodgers and Hart, just to name a few.

“This terrifyingly young group are already regulars on the Sydney music scene with an ambient jazz sound far beyond their tender years.” Time Out Sydney, March 2007.
